It's 2012 in China. Many netizens treated New Years' Eve as a time for reflection, often bittersweet.
Most commenters on Sina Weibo welcomed the new year wistfully; one described "a single lonely lantern flying into space...the world has changed around us." Others took the opportunity to reach out to someone special: "Time can pull two people closer or it can pull them further apart. I hope 2012 brings you and me even closer."
A minority were simply glad to leave 2011 behind. One microblogger wrote, "I already can't wait to say goodbye to 2011, to all the sluts, all those lonely nights, all those broken promises and all the confusing troubles, goodbye." Another wrote, "Since everyone says 2012 is the end of the world, take all your unnecessary regret, pain and sadness and bury them in 2011 as it leaves."
One commenter sought to capture the mixed sentiment, writing, "2011. You've been a fool...a fool. For believing that miracles can happen. If they didn't, then in 2012...happy new year to all the fools. Stay foolish."
