Two Year Old Girl Has Become Tragic Symbol of Bullet Train Catastrophe
Netizens’ responses varied from well-wishers telling little Yiyi that "her parents' love will sustain her much like Harry Potter" and praying for "a lifetime of good fortune for this unfortunate child who has lost so much" to renewed criticism of the government's handling of the accident, which needs "greater transparency" and more "compensation for the victims." The official report on the reasons for the accident have yet to be released and one netizen said the reason for the delay is that "high level officials are finding it hard to produce a 'balanced' report" because "the blame would fall on too many." Others said "the truth in China has become a luxury item…so disappointed" and "what use do we have for this type of government that won’t take responsibility...they must tell the living the truth so that the dead may rest." One person simply posted "we will never forget…we will never forget."
Government response to the accident had been criticized for attempts to limit domestic media coverage and for hasty recovery efforts - which included the controversial burial of one of the wrecked train cars - that observers claim were more focused on reopening the train line than on rescuing survivors. Yiyi, whose full name is Zhang Weiyi, was pulled from the wreckage over twenty hours after the accident after authorities on the scene had already declared that there were no more survivors to be found.
